Has anyone ever been to one of the Family History Centers run by FamilySearch.org and the Church of Latter Day Saints? I've always been interested in checking it out, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with doing research there that they'd like to share. Thanks!

I've been to Family History Centers in San Bruno, CA and Menlo Park, CA on many occasions. They have lots of records compiled on microfische that LDS researchers have collected. My view is that LDS is a good place to start -- a place where you can get leads that you can follow up and confirm other places.

Oh I thought we were talking about going to Salt Lake City.

I do go to the Family History Center in Oakland, they are wonderful!

They are probably a good place to start, but I also question their information sometimes. I found a couple of lines online that were done by a LDS person that took me all the way back to the Garden of Eden. And I have seen other trees done by LDS people with birthdates that don't really match up. People way too young to be parents.

I agree completely. What you find there, you really need to confirm someplace else to consider it valid for your own lineage.

Well Im looking for something specific. There is a book they have in SLC that has county census records of McNairy County Tennessee from 1910 and they just arent anywhere else. believe me, I have checked. I have also ordered every microfilm of every court record from that county around that time.
I cant even get a response from the county itself to help me.

Barry, OF COURSE you are descended from Adam and Eve! you dont think you are a monkey do you?

yeap, contributions of individuals of family trees is NOT reliable. You gotta go to the source or it doesnt count.

I have done soooo much research and every line seems to go way back (except not to the garden of eden, I must be a monkey after all). but I wonder, at some point, do researchers say, well I cant find the absolutely correct ancestor, but here is one with the same name, so they must be a relation?
Well, the only ones whose names make it over time are VIPs. so how much are we assuming lineage of VIPs and how much is really accurate? oh to travel through time.

marcia there is also the sutro library in san francisco which is supposedly the largest genealogical library west of salt lake city. it's behind stonestown.

Well Ill keep it in mind, the San Bruno place. Its just that Im looking for a particular census record that is not available through the Mormon family research centers, only in Salt Lake. Well I checked a list of where it is available and it came up as being on file at the Sutro Library.

After I get ahold of it, it will lead me to other research, so I will keep that San Bruno place as an option.
Maybe if Im lucky Ill find out that I am also descended from Greek Gods. do you know which one you are? do you have any super powers that you know of?

Another superb resource. I like going there first and finding all the census records for a project at one time. Then with those in hand I go to Sutro and find even more details. :)

Yeah, Barry is EVERYTHING!! While Im just descended from a bunch of poor farmers who lived in sod houses.
Ive GOT to get back to that research center and find SOMETHING worthwhile.

Barry may represent the street, but I represent those rascally scions of Scottish landed gentry who couldn't keep their hands off the hired help. ;)

i don't know much about my scot or any of my european ancestors for that matter. all i have on them is unverified stuff that i found on ancestry.com and so on. i am 3/4 british isles and 1/4 swiss. it's the swiss side that were the pimp and ho.

my great grandmother and great grandfather on my mom's side were ran out of kansas and had their kids taken away from them around 1900. this was a big family secret for the longest time. in fact, i only found out about it a few years ago. the story i heard growing up was quite different. my uncle even went back to kansas and found a newspaper story about it. i think it was called pandering. not only was he pimping my great grandmother but he had another woman working with them.

i wrote a paper for a college class about them and the teacher was so impressed that he shook my hand when he handed the paper back to me. my mom would be very embarrassed if she knew i was writing papers for college about them.
