You guys ( and gals) are surely the ones to know the answer to this question. My kids are my first cousin's-----------? Are they her first cousins, once removed, or are they her second cousins? How does that go? Thanks, in advance, for I'm confident you'll give me my answer.

Re: Cousins, Once Removed
Mon, July 10, 2006 - 1:14 PMAh, all you need is a good consanguinity chart ... :) (Seriously though, I found a very helpful consanguinity chart in a legal probate reference a while ago.)
My understanding is that siblings have common parents, first cousins have common grandparents, and second cousins have commond great grandparents, etc. while the "removed" term refers to a difference in generations. (Of course, someone else should verify my explanations and examples here.)
My cousin Stephanie, for example, recently had a baby boy named George. Stephanie and I are first cousins -- that is, Stephanie and I have a set of grandparents in common -- so Stephanie's son George is my first cousin once removed. My own sister, Lesley, also had a baby recently, named Quinn. Because they share a common great grandparent, Quinn and George are then second cousins.
In your case, I believe that to your first cousin, your kids are her first cousins once removed.

Re: Cousins, Once Removed
Tue, July 11, 2006 - 12:46 PMOne other thing I've heard: you're only technically supposed to count removal "downward." I have a "cousin" Liz. (She's recently written a book, by the way, about her mom, an author, and the family letters they sent each other, and I built her a little website to support the book: www.lizpetry.com .)
Her mother's mother's father is also my father's father's father's FATHER. Liz is in my father's generation. (To complicate matters, we have one common blood relative back there, but not two. Our common ancestor was married 3 times, all to women named Ann/Anna/Hannah, and Liz and I are descended from different marriages...)
This is where it helps to use something like Family Tree Maker built-in calculator. It tells me I am Liz' "half 2nd cousin once removed."
But, back to the "down" side. Tehcnically, what I hear is I am HER "... once removed" but she is NOT MY "... once removed". You 're only supposed to count this relationship downward, I guess to clarify who is in the lower generation. This is REALLY A nit-picky thing, and I don't see it out there that much.
Anyway, there are charts out there, and little tools to help:

ourancestry.com/cousins.html
to Google a few! -

Re: Cousins, Once Removed
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 3:52 PMThe REFERENCE person is the one CLOSEST to the COMMON ANCESTOR.
You first cousin's relationship to your children is: First Cousins, once removed. The same in reverse: Your children's relationship to your first cousins is: First Cousin's, once removed. The same.
You have to provide additional information if someone wants to figure out just WHO is closer to the common ancestor.
